Ross Wooldridge and his Tribute to
ARTIE SHAW AND HIS GRAMERCY 5

A new addition to the library is Ross’ tip of the hat to swing era clarinet legend
Artie Shaw and his Gramercy 5. Shaw’s famous small group was formed in 1940 in response to the hits that were being created by Benny Goodman and his trio, quartet and sextet. Ever the one to do things his own way, Shaw decided that he would employ a sound never heard in jazz before, and hence the first version of the Gramercy 5 featured Johnny Guarnieri on the unusual choice of a harpsichord instead of piano. A jazz first! Sparsely recorded with only two sessions in 6 years for RCA, Shaw switched the instrumentation back to the piano for the second recording session in 1945. This collection features selections culled from two live performance recordings, and features another spectacular lineup of the best in Canadian jazz. Yes, there really is a harpsichord!!
Available in CD and digital download format.
